Iconic Paul Frankl bamboo and rattan two seat modular sofa, USA 1940s. Produced most likely by Ritts Tropitan. This authentic sofa features the famous six-strand pretzel side arms and stacked pole bamboo base. The original inner spring cushions are substantial, heavy mattress-like. The cushions are upholstered in a greenish-gray colored wool with a very nice soft feel. A really nice ‘show-off’ on your terrace or patio! The sofa is in well preserved original condition according its age and use, cushions are original with later upholstery.
Paul Frankl was an Austrian designer, furniture maker, architect and writer. Some of Frankl’s designs had distinctive Asian influences, inspired by his interest in Chinese and Japanese arts. In the 1940s he was one of the first designers to utilize free-form and biomorphic shapes. He experimented with bamboos and hardwood. Throughout the 1940s and 50s Frankl designed lines of wicker, cane, bamboo and rattan furniture for both indoor and outdoor use.
The upholstery is in good condition, the bamboo frame has some signs of use consistent with age and use.
