Ron Arad's unconventional design approach always challenges the way materials are used, both in the design phase and during production. His new Do-Lo-Rez blends and unites the worlds of art, design and technology. Do-Lo-Rez is a highly contemporary sofa consisting of multiple soft, square-based cube or rectangular units of varying heights. The units are arranged in rows to form the shape of the sofa and are attached to a platform with steel pins. The units all have a footprint of 21x21 cm, while the height ranges from 27.5 cm to 83 cm. They are made of polyurethane foam of varying densities; a stiffer foam is used at the bottom of each unit to grip the steel peg, while softer foam at the top provides optimal comfort. Do-Lo-Rez units can be rearranged to create a wide range of shapes and compositions. This seemingly simple product is actually extraordinarily complex in terms of construction, structure and manufacturing. Ron Arad offers a contemporary take on design to bring the virtual world to the real world. A still very clean sofa with good, still-clean upholstery and minimal signs of use. Considering the (aesthetic) quality and original price a bargain. This fits in public environments such as office and certainly at home for the high-end enthusiast.
