Luc Dondeyne (Genk, 1963) employs a very personal painting style, which has similarities to nineteenth-century impressionism. His work is characterized by accurate, casually brushed paint strokes in distinct colors that act as puzzle pieces for the overall picture. Unlike the painting of the French Impressionists, Dondeyne's work has a strong narrative character, focusing on everyday reality and the reality that surrounds him. He walks the fine line between intense observation and subtle voyeurism in works that are immediately recognizable, but at the same time have an alienating element: there is something indefinable in the apparent trivialities he captures. Dondeyne challenges the viewer to look beyond the painted scene so that the reality presented comes to the fore. The uncanny, dark-melancholic atmosphere in his paintings adds to the confrontational reality of the story, making his work both personal and universal.
