2 Bossche School benches/stools Dom Hans van der Laan / Jan de Jong Netherlands, period circa 1970 Benedictine monk/architect Dom Hans van der Laan (1904-1991) developed the "plastic number," a spatial formula that determined the ideal dimensions of religious and non-religious buildings and their interiors. Together with his former pupil Jan de Jong (1917-2001), they were the leading figures of the postwar architectural movement the Bossche School Characteristic of their buildings and furniture are the very austere and sober style. Due to secularization and the choice at the time to preserve only the oldest and most historic church buildings, many later religious buildings from the Bossche School have been demolished.
