Ilmari Tapiovaara was a Finnish interior architect and designer. He was also a visiting professor at the famous Illinois Institute of Technology. In his early creative period, while still studying in Helsinki, he worked in Alvar Aalto's studio in London. After his studies, he was an assistant to Le Corbusier in Paris. In the early fifties, Tapiovaara opened his own studio in Helsinki together with his wife Annikki. Between 1951 and 1960, Ilmari Tapiovaara received six gold medals for his designs at the Milan Triennale - more than any other designer. In 1971 he received the Finnish State Prize for Design. Ilmari Tapiovaara died in Helsinki in 1999.
Tapiovaara designed the Crinolette armchair in 1962 based on his famous Mademoiselle chair.
The chair is in very good condition with light wear. The chair comes from the estate of the literary critic Fritz J. Raddatz.
