African face mask from Nyanga Province (southern Gabon). The Punu are a Bantu people from Central Africa, mainly located in southern Gabon. Carved from a local type of wood, face finished with white kaolin. The white color of the mask is asexual, white is a symbol of peace, gods, spirits of the dead and the afterlife. Therefore the predominant color in celebrations, funerals and commemorations. Purchased in Tchibanga (South Gabon) in the late 1980s. Year of design: not known.
Normal signs of use and wear due to age.
Slight damage to 1 auricle.
