The ring is made by drilling a hole with a bamboo stick. Such rings play an important role within the social, political and ceremonial lives of the Abelam. They are part of the dowry and are used as payment of compensation. They are also used in initiation rituals. They were also sometimes related to yams and women those to indicate their status within the community. The notches on top symbolise the beak of a hornbill which was associated to the sun.
