Product description
Rohe's iconic set with rattan top and black tubular frame base were designed by Rohé's most famous designer: Dirk van Sliedregt. Van Sliedregt was a furniture designer, interior designer and teacher. A true self-made man, he rose from furniture maker to eventually become academy director of the Rietveld Academy. Van Sliedregt valued good craftsmanship and practical experience. He put the ease of use and functionality of a piece of furniture first. And was thus less of a fusser. In 1949, Van Sliedrecht was engaged by the Jonkers firm to improve the heavy and complicated supporting structure of their chairs. Van Sliedregt had impressed with competition designs for demountable and material-efficient furniture. Because of his background as a furniture maker, he had excellent contact with the cane weavers who made his models. In the postwar period, Van Sliedregt designed no less than 250 pieces of beautiful furniture, which included seating comfort, limited use of materials and lack of space. The success of his furniture prompted numerous copies from competing furniture makers. Van Sliedregt's furniture has a timeless character. Today, designers like to be inspired again by Van Sliedregt's designs.
