The Netherlands is celebrating! On April 30, 2013, the new orange vase, the Koningsvaasje, will be released by the National Glass Museum. The vase is designed by Willem Noyons and will be released in honor of the change of regime where Queen Beatrix abdicates and Prince Willem-Alexander will be inaugurated as king.
Noyons was inspired by the pomegranate when designing this vase. The pomegranate is a fruit with many symbolic meanings. It has a special and royal appearance and was used as a sign of wealth and fertility in the decoration of King Solomon's first temple. The pomegranate also represents renewal of nature and represents the symbolic representation of the diversity and unity of life. While searching for a recipe for bright red glass, an orange-colored glass was created at the Leerdam Glass Factory in which designer Chris Lanooy designed the famous Juliana vase in 1927 to mark the 18th birthday of the princess. In the tradition of the Orange Vases, a series of vases was created. The National Glass Museum has the complete collection of this rich tradition on display. Noyons designed the Alexander and Maxima vase in 2002, on the occasion of their wedding. In 2005, he designed another vase, the so-called Alexia vase. The Orange Vase is released in a numbered and signed edition. The Orange Vase can be ordered at www.oranjevaasje.nl or at the National Glass Museum.
