Globe, J. Forest, late 19th century. XIX - pps. s. XXth century - France
Original French globe from the late 19th to the first third of the 20th century. Names of countries, regions, oceans, etc. are represented in French. Made of paper on plaster, it has a metal stem to which an ebony base is attached. It bears the French label: "Globe terrestre à l'echelle de 1 : 40.000.000.000. Drawn up by J. Forest. On sale in Paris. Chez l'auteur 17, rue Seguier. Près la place S. Michel".
It was therefore produced by the J. Forest publishing house, which produced a large number of globes in different scales and for different markets, such as German, American, Spanish, French and English, particularly during the golden age of French Art Deco.
This is a globe containing a wealth of geographical information. It features two small cartouches, one with the legend and symbology, the other showing the possessions, colonies and protectorates of the European powers in different colors. It also indicates sea routes and voyage times.
Supplier of school supplies, atlases and globes to the French Ministry of Public Instruction, J. Forest's successor was the Paris publishing house Girard.
