He was born in Berlin, where his parents moved from Vienna in 1903 because his father Karel started working in state theaters as a set designer. In 1923 they moved to Czechoslovakia, and his father joined the National Theater in Prague as a stage designer. Karel Havlíček junior studied in secondary schools in Berlin and Prague and, under the influence of his father and friends (Cesar Klein, Pankok, Emil Pirchan and Aravantinos), became interested in art. However, his father persuaded him to study law at Charles University, and after graduation he began his career as a clerk. In 1946 he moved to Kadaň and started working in the Thun porcelain factory in Klášterec nad Ohří. From 1955, he changed various heavy manual work. He fulfilled himself in visiting natural museums, reading his favorite Kant and Schopenhauer, and especially in drawing. For decades, he drew a picture every day. The communist regime did not allow his works to be exhibited, so only a few artists and writers recognized him, such as Karel Teige, Vratislav Effenberger and Ivo Pondělíček. Several exhibitions were held in Germany and Austria thanks to his friend Gotthard Schwinge. The city gallery in Kada is named after him.
