Lamp Muller Fréres, Art Nouveau, 1920 - Lunéville, France
A splendid Art Nouveau pendant lamp made in early 20th-century France by Muller Fréres. Elegant and delicate, it features a light wrought-iron structure enhanced by extraordinary glass shades. At its center is a large glass ceiling from which emerge the three arms or lights. The glass is opaque and mottled, with gradations of color from white to pink. The edges of the lampshades are molded as if they were flowers. The iron structure also features vegetal elements such as fleshy vine leaves. Art Nouveau took its inspiration from nature, echoing the sinuous, organic shapes that bring the warmth so important in a home. These whip-like lines, reminiscent of arms, will be used endlessly in this wonderful style.

Muller Frères (Co.)
The Muller brothers were a family of renowned glass craftsmen from the Moselle region of France. In all, there were ten of them, nine men and one woman, all involved in glassmaking. At first, several of them worked in glassworks in Saint-Louis, but during the Franco-Prussian war (1870-71), the family was evacuated to Lunéville. Around 1885, two of the brothers, Désiré and Eugène, joined the workshop of Émile Gallé, master of Art Nouveau glass, where they worked in the engraving and cutting departments. They are joined by the other brothers Henri, Pierre and Victor.
In 1895, Henri Müller decided to become independent and set up his own glassworks in Lunéville. Gradually, the other brothers joined him in this initiative and created the Muller Frères company, which quickly specialized in the production of Art Nouveau glassware, applying the knowledge acquired in Gallé's workshop. Muller's work is highly regarded for its technical and artistic quality.
In 1910, the company begins manufacturing lamps in collaboration with Chapelle, reaching its peak and employing up to 300 workers. Production focused on vases, lampshades and chandeliers, often featuring layers of colored glass, characteristic of the Art Nouveau style. After the First World War, the Art Deco style began to gain in popularity, influencing Müller's creations.
However, the company was hit by the Great Depression and, in 1933, production came to a halt. Three years later, the factory closed its doors for good, putting an end to the Müller brothers' successful career in the creation of art glass.
