Cache Pot / Pot en barbotine Orchies, 20th c. - France
Extraordinary 20th century French barbotine cache-pot. Made in Orchies, in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, one of the country's most northerly regions. Its structure is simple, a sort of wide-mouth pot, making it easy to use. What's striking are the decorations and the technique used to create them. The top of the pot is decorated with raised floral motifs in pink and mauve, typical of the influence of French decorative art, often associated with styles such as Art Nouveau or even older models. These floral cartouches are interspersed with sky-blue triglyphs. These bright colors contrast with the sober brown tones of the base, typical of French ceramics in this style.
In technical terms, engobe is a decorative process that consists of painting with white or colored pastes, which are then covered with a ceramic glaze or enamel to create relief and color effects. In the lower part, a stamp with a mill from Moulin-des-Loups and "Orchies".
About the manufacture of Orchies
Emile L'Herminé Declercq, already owner of an earthenware factory in Rimbaud (Belgium) in the 1870s, wished to increase his production, and moved with his brother Joseph to Orchies in 1886. Orchies, former stronghold of the Counts of Flanders, is close to the Belgian border and not far from Saint-Amand-les-Eaux, a famous center of earthenware production since the 18th century, with the "Moulin des Lobes" earthenware factory. In 1904, production shifted to artistic earthenware under the name "L'Herminé et Cie". The brand name OLD or Orchies L'Herminé Declercq was introduced. In the 1920s, the Orchies faience factory merged with the Hamage faience factory to become Le Moulin des Loups.
