Product description
Set of 4 stoneware soup plates, beautifully glazed in shades of brown, green, gray and blue. Beautiful craftsmanship in both throwing and glazing. These plates are all signed by Maurice Pitot, a renowned Belgian ceramist (1926 - 2010) based in Chatelineau, Belgium. He used stoneware from nearby Bouffioulx, nicknamed the "city of pottery". His signature seems to have evolved considerably over time, so I'd date these plates to the 60s or 70s, but I'm not sure. Although his ceramics can be found in well-known sales catalogs, notably at "Pierre Bergé et associés", there is very little information on Maurice Pitot himself, but I'd be delighted to learn more about him, including why he signed "Pitot p", so please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any. These plates are in very nice condition, no cracks, no chips, maybe tiny chips, but it looks more like original to me, tiny bubbles popped in the enameling. Some of them have blisters and reliefs, obviously original. They are not exactly identical in terms of dimensions, being around 18 cm in diameter and varying in height from 5 to 5.6 cm.
